“المهرّج” (The Clown)
Text by Mohamad El Maghout
Directed and adapted by Lina Abyad
In ArabicThe Clown
During a theater performance, a lame clown derides Abdul Rahman El Dakal, the conqueror of Andalusia. Offended, the Umayyad warrior asks him to meet in the afterlife.
The comedian informed him that he was only repeating a text written by authors who slump for hours in cafes discussing difficulties of life, creation and civilization.
Abdul Rahman El Dakal, Aka Sakr Koreish, was intrigued: Do his descendants enjoy such a civilization? The comedian shows him modern civilization, but does not mention the fact that XX1st century Arabs are only consumers. Despite this misunderstanding, the Umayyad was relieved: the descendants are on a par with the ancestors.
Dazzled by this young man, Koreich suggested naming him governor of one of the provinces conquered by Arabs. He learns then that Andalusia, Iskandaroun and Palestine were lost: “What about the people?”, cries out the warrior. “What about the people?” The clown explains to him that the secret police of various Arab regimes have permanently destroyed the valiance and courage of these people, and transformed them into “millions of rabbits and cockroaches.”
Devastated, El Dakal decides to personally conquer back Palestine, the most sacred of lands.
But he is arrested at the borders of the Arab world. No one recognizes him. Against all odds, the cruel conqueror is seized by his bloody past. The ambassador of Spain proposes a trade-in: Abdul Rahman el Dakal against 30 thousand tons of onions.
A black farce of resounding contemporaneousness.

Abstract: Assessing software quality is fundamental in the software developing field. Most software characteristics (such as maintainability, reusability, stability, etc.) cannot be measured before the product is used for a certain period of time, but they can be predicted or estimated based on other measurable attributes (such as cohesion, coupling, and size). Software quality estimation models, in particular rule-based ones, have been extensively used. But the accuracy of these models deteriorates when they are used on new or unseen data. In this talk, we propose a genetic algorithm-based approach to improve the accuracy of such models on new data and we focus on one particular software quality, namely stability of OOP classes.

The Computer Science and Mathematics Division in Beirut is organizing a seminar on “Power Consumption in Data Centers: Challenges and Opportunities,” December 21, 2006 at 4:30 p.m. in BB1526, Beirut Campus. The seminar will be conducted by Manal Houri, PhD candidate at Southern Methodist University.
Abstract: With the growth of complicated systems and the thrift for high-performance and reliability, energy consumption becomes a critical issue. Japan’s NEC Earth simulator is capable of executing 40 Tflops but it requires 12 Megawatts of power, which are enough to provide lighting for a small city. Energy consumption is particularly critical in data centers like Google and Yahoo where a huge number of mirror servers are used in an attempt to increase availability and reliability and minimize failures. The last few years have seen a dramatic increase in the number, size, and uses of these data centers where each contains more than 10,000 servers. This booming business is increasingly challenging designers with power consumption, heat dissipation and cooling provisioning. It is noted that only 10% of the capacity of these servers are invested leaving the rest of the capacity wasted. Data centers management would prefer to minimize the idle periods of these machines, in order to minimize the huge costs of power consumption dissipated mainly by their processing units. Many strategies at various levels of the data center aiming at reducing power consumption exist. Nevertheless, virtualization and consolidation stand out as major methods in the power consumption state of the art.

“The Power of Argument, Not the Argument of Power” expresses this year’s challenge to provide a peaceful alternative to the violent power struggles Lebanon has witnessed. In 2006, 76 LAU student trainers and organizers and 604 student delegates from 83 public and private schools across Lebanon participated in the event. Students role-played as ambassadors from UN member states, writing position papers, negotiating with others, addressing committees, and navigating the UN’s rules of procedure.
This year poses an additional challenge. GC-LAUMUN seeks to build a culture of peaceful conflict resolution by offering the alternative of diplomatic critical debate against the war and instabilities that Lebanon has witnessed during last year.
Students will better understand their individual contexts in Lebanese and global societies and ultimately use their new skills to find real solutions to real problems.
LAU will be closed November 23, 2006. Please check regularly for updates.

Please remember that LAU provides each student with 20 MB of storage space for e-mail. Users whose accounts exceed that quota won’t receive any new messages until they delete some messages to make space. To see how much space you are using, log in to Webmail and look at the bottom of the Inbox. More details are available under Options, Account Summary.
Note that this quota counts for all your email including your Inbox, Sent, Trash and any other stored folders on the server. It does not apply to e-mail stored on your own computer. If you use the "Leave Mail on Server" option in your e-mail application, you should periodically log in to Webmail, delete excess e-mail from your Inbox and empty the Trash.
Videoconferencing over ISDN is available at LAU. Details and procedure.
This IT service allows full-time faculty to access the internet and LAU intranet by means of a regular modem dial-up connection. Setup instructions.
